Sean Mueller understands ethical failure from the inside. At 32, he founded a hedge fund that grew to more than $100 million in assets. Success came quickly, but over time, pride, pressure, rationalization, and small compromises began moving boundaries he once believed he would never cross. Those decisions ultimately led to a securities fraud conviction and 14 years in prison.

During his incarceration, Sean confronted the choices that had brought him there and began the long process of rebuilding his life. He immersed himself in education and hundreds of books, worked in dog behavior modification, and focused on developing the integrity, humility, and accountability that had been missing from his earlier definition of success.

After his release in 2024, Sean returned to the University of Colorado Denver, where he earned his bachelor's degree in communication summa cum laude. He now serves on the advisory board for CU Denver's Prison Education Program and founded Proactive Ethics to help others recognize the warning signs of ethical drift before those signs become misconduct.

Today, Sean speaks to corporate teams, compliance professionals, financial organizations, professional associations, and university audiences. His message is simple: ethical failure rarely begins with one terrible decision. It develops gradually, through pressure, rationalization, and small compromises.
